DEGREES & CERTIFICATIONS

  • Description: A Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) program in Psychiatry and a Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) program in Psychiatry are each an optional, additional step for Psychiatrists who already hold an MD or DO.

    • A Ph.D. in Psychiatry program focuses on research, coursework, and a psychiatry residency, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of both clinical practice and research methodologies. The Ph.D. in Psychiatry culminates in a dissertation on a psychiatric topic.

    • A Psy.D. in Psychiatry includes coursework, practical training, and a clinical internship. The focus is on applied clinical skills, compared to the research focus of a Ph.D. in Psychiatry. Coursework covers topics including psychopathology, assessment, intervention techniques, ethics, and diversity issues. Individuals can expect to spend significant time in supervised clinical practicums and a final internship year.

    • Program Duration: 5-7 years (full-time) for Ph.D. in Psychiatry. 4-5 years (full-time) for Psy.D. in Psychiatry.

    • Prerequisites: MD (Doctor of Medicine) or DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine).

    • Certification & Licensure: An individual entering a Ph.D. in Psychiatry or Psy.D. in Psychiatry program would typically already hold a psychiatry license. The Ph.D./Psy.D. in Psychiatry does not make graduates eligible for any additional certifications or licenses.

WHERE TO STUDY IN OHIO

There are no Ph.D. in Psychiatry or Psy.D. in Psychiatry programs offered in the state of Ohio. Such programs are rare. The Department of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai (Manhattan) offers a combined MD+Ph.D. program in Psychiatry, and Weill Cornell Medicine (Manhattan) offers an MD+Ph.D. Program in Psychodynamic Psychiatry. If you are interested in pursuing a doctorate in Psychiatry to further your research, consider one of the blended MD+Ph.D. programs out of state. Remember that an MD or DO is the path to become a licensed, practicing psychiatrist.
