Step 1: Determine Your Pathway
Find out the education requirements for the job title that interests you.
Decide whether to start with an associate's degree, a bachelor's degree, or a non-degree training program.
Step 2: Research and Select a Program
Review accredited programs.
Compare public and private Ohio colleges and universities.
Evaluate delivery format: in-person, hybrid, online, full-time, part-time.
Look into program concentrations.
Ask about Advanced Standing or accelerated or 3+2 programs if you already have a degree.
Step 3: Check Admissions Requirements
Confirm GPA requirements, prerequisites, and testing policies.
Check whether recommendation letters, personal statements, interviews, and/or auditions are required.
Identify and double-check application deadlines.
Determine whether the school participates in transfer programs, and which ones.
Step 4: Apply for Financial Aid
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible.
Apply for state, institutional, and private scholarships. Many colleges and universities have their own scholarships, which may vary by department. Ask your local community (places of worship, special interest groups, businesses, credit unions, etc.) if they offer scholarships.
Look into work-study and graduate assistantships. If currently employed, ask your employer about tuition reimbursement benefits.
Consider state-supported programs like the University Partnership Program that provide funding in exchange for work commitments in child welfare.
Step 5: Submit Your Application
Apply through the university’s application portal. Submit at least 24 hours before the deadline, to allow time to solve technical glitches.
Upload all required materials: transcripts, test scores (if needed), essays, resume, etc.
Track your application status and follow up on missing documents.
Step 6: Complete Entrance Requirements
After acceptance, confirm your attendance.
Complete any required background checks, drug screenings, or medical clearances.
Attend orientation and meet with your academic advisor. Ask your advisor to help you create a course sequence plan. If you follow the plan, you will graduate on time.
Register for your first-semester courses and understand how to access field placement opportunities.
Verify that transfer credits were accepted.
Step 7: Begin Program and Stay On Track
Stay connected with your academic advisor and track your progress toward graduation. Keep your own documentation in case of computer glitch or advisor error.
Apply early for field placements or internships, especially those in competitive settings such as hospitals and schools.
Join campus social work associations or honor societies.
Take advantage of tutoring, writing centers, and mental health resources.
Stay on top of licensure prep timelines.
Step 8: Graduate and Apply for Licensure
Graduate with your degree from an accredited program.
Apply for Ohio licensure (if applicable).
OPTIONAL – Advance Your Career
Pursue specialized certifications.
Apply for graduate degree programs.
Consider obtaining higher levels of licensure or credentials.
Join professional organizations for networking and continuing education.
Attend state conferences and workshops to stay updated on best practices, trends, and policy.
