Early Childhood & Education

The Early Childhood & Education degree family includes programs focused on the development, care, and education of young children. Degrees in education are required for certifications in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) and can also qualify individuals for jobs in other areas of behavioral health.

    • Description: Early Childhood Training prepares individuals for the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or the Ohio Infant Family Affiliate Level I (OIFA-I).

    • Program Duration: 120 hours for CDA, additional 20 hours for OIFA-I. Evening, weekend, online, or part-time classes may be available to support working adults. Prerequisites: High School Diploma or GED.

    • Certification & Licensure: Completion of 120 hours of training in CDA-approved areas and 480 hours of experience working with young children may lead to eligibility for the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential., CDA or higher plus 2 years' experience and 20 training hours may lead to the OIFA-I.

    • Description: An Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Early Childhood Education prepares individuals for certifications in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) and for jobs in other areas of behavioral health. 

    • Program Duration:  2 years (full-time), or longer for part-time. Full-time or part-time; available in-person and online formats. Evening, weekend, online, or part-time classes are available at some programs to support working adults.

    • Prerequisites: High School Diploma or GED.

    Certification & Licensure: The associate's degree in Early Childhood, plus 2 years' experience, and 20 training hours may lead to the Ohio Infant Family Affiliate Level I (OIFA-I).

    • Description: A Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree in Early Childhood Education prepares individuals for certifications in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) and for jobs in other areas of behavioral health. Coursework focuses on pedagogy, child development, and inclusive education.

    • Program Duration: 4 years (full-time), or longer for part-time. Full-time or part-time; available in-person and online formats. Evening, weekend, online, or part-time classes are available at some programs to support working adults. 

    • Prerequisites: High School Diploma or GED. Teacher preparation programs may carry additional prerequisites.

    • Certification & Licensure: The bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, plus 2 years' experience, and 30 training hours may lead to the Ohio Infant Family Affiliate Level II (OIFA-II).

    • Description:  A Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree in Education prepares individuals for certifications in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) and for jobs in other areas of behavioral health. A BA typically focuses on liberal arts and social sciences, while a BS emphasizes science, math, and research. A B.Ed. is specifically designed for those aspiring to become teachers and may include coursework in pedagogy, educational psychology, and curriculum development.

    • Program Duration: 4 years (full-time), or longer for part-time. Evening, weekend, online, or part-time classes are available at some programs to support working adults. 

    • Prerequisites: High School Diploma or GED. Teacher preparation programs may carry additional prerequisites.

    • Certification & Licensure: The bachelor's degree in Education, plus 2 years' experience, and 30 training hours may lead to the Ohio Infant Family Affiliate Level II (OIFA-II).

    • Description: Master of Education (M.Ed.), Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), Master of Science in Education (M.S. Ed.), and Master of Arts in Education (M.A. Ed.) degrees are graduate programs that  offer advanced study in education, focusing on areas such as curriculum and instruction, educational leadership, and special education.

    • Program Duration: 1-3 years (full-time), or longer for part-time. Evening, weekend, online, or part-time classes are available at some programs to support working adults.

    • Prerequisites: Bachelor's degree in education or a related field.

    • Certification & Licensure: The master's degree in Education, plus 2 years' experience, and 40 training hours may lead to the Ohio Infant Family Affiliate Level III (OIFA-III).
